Collect a container, a filtering cloth or bandana, and a purification method such as a portable filter, purification tablets, or a heat source for boiling.

Pour the water through a cloth or bandana to remove large particles and sediment. This step is crucial for improving the clarity and taste of the water.

Use your chosen purification method. Boil the water for at least one minute, use purification tablets as directed, or employ a portable filter to eliminate bacteria and pathogens.

  • Two clear bottles
  • Muddy water

  4. Add fine sand, charcoal, coarse sand, and gravel.
  5. Pour muddy water through slowly.

Clear water is not always safe water. Many harmful organisms are invisible. A stream that looks crystal clear may still contain disease-causing microbes.

Teach Scouts the phrase:  “Filter for clarity, purify for safety.”

To purify water, bring it to a rolling boil for one minute. If you are at a high altitude above 6,500 feet (2,000 meters), boil it for three minutes. This process kills harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites

A Millbank bag is a traditional canvas water filter bag used by the military, scouts, and bushcrafters to remove mud, leaves, and other sediment from water before purification.
