Learn How to Signal for Rescue in the Outdoors
When someone is lost, injured or stranded in the countryside, knowing how to signal for help can make the difference between being found quickly or remaining unnoticed. Emergency signalling is an essential bushcraft and survival skill that every Scout should understand.
For the Scouts Survival Badge, learning a variety of signalling methods helps Scouts prepare for real outdoor emergencies while developing confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The Universal Distress Signal
The internationally recognised distress signal is:
Six Signals Every Minute
Give six whistle blasts, torch flashes or shouts within one minute.
Pause for one minute.
Repeat the sequence until help arrives.
A rescuer will normally reply with:
Three signals every minute
This lets you know your signal has been seen.


Signal Fire
Start by building a strong fire using dry tinder, kindling and fuel wood. Once it is burning well, add green leaves, fresh branches or damp vegetation to create thick white smoke during the day.
At night, bright flames are usually more visible than smoke, so keep the fire well supplied with dry wood.
- Only light a signal fire if it is safe and permitted.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Keep water or soil nearby to extinguish it if necessary.
- Clear the area around the fire to prevent it spreading.
- Extinguish the fire completely before leaving the site.
A well-built signal fire can provide warmth, boost morale and greatly increase your chances of being seen by rescuers.

Whistle
One of the best ways is a whistle, itworks in all weather conditions and can be used both day and night. In an emergency, blow six short blasts over one minute, then pause for one minute before repeating. This is the internationally recognised distress signal and greatly increases the chances of rescuers locating you.
Advantages
- Very little effort
- Works day or night
- Travels much further than shouting
- Won't damage your voice
Every Scout should carry a whistle on expeditions.

Signal Mirror
A small signalling mirror can reflect sunlight several miles.
Tips: Aim towards surch aircraft or helicopter or distant search teams.
Sweep the reflected light across the target.
Even improvised mirrors or shiny metal can work. Air liners will be to high.

Torch
A powerful LED torch is excellent after dark.
Use:
Six flashes every minute
Repeat until answered
Keep spare batteries if possible

Bright Clothing
Lay brightly coloured clothing, tarps or emergency blankets on open ground.
The larger the contrast with the surrounding landscape, the easier it is to spot from the air.
Orange, red and silver work particularly well.

Improvised Signalling
If you have no equipment, use what nature provides.
Examples include: Arrange logs into large symbols. Lay stones in contrasting shapes. Stamp messages into snow. Dig trenches in sand. Spread backpacks across open ground. Wave a brightly coloured jacket. Create reflective surfaces using foil or metal.
Think BIG—the larger your signal, the easier it is to spot.
Modern Emergency Communication Devices
While traditional signalling methods remain essential, modern emergency communication devices have dramatically improved safety for Scouts, expedition leaders, mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts. These devices allow you to contact emergency services or trusted contacts even when there is no mobile phone coverage.

Satellite Communicators
Satellite communicators use satellite networks to send and receive messages almost anywhere in the world.
Most devices allow you to:
- Send an SOS emergency alert to a professional rescue coordination centre.
- Exchange two-way text messages with family or rescue teams.
- Share your GPS location.
- Send regular check-in messages to confirm you are safe.
- Navigate using built-in GPS.
These devices are ideal for multi-day expeditions, remote hiking, canoe expeditions and wilderness camps.
Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs)
A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is designed solely for life-threatening emergencies.
When activated, a PLB:
- Sends your exact GPS location (on GPS-enabled models).
- Transmits a distress signal via the international COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system.
- Alerts the appropriate search and rescue authority.
- Works worldwide without requiring a subscription.
PLBs have very long battery life and are extremely reliable, but they should only be activated when there is a genuine emergency.
Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs)
EPIRBs are larger emergency beacons designed primarily for:
- Sailing
- Offshore boating
- Sea kayaking
- Marine expeditions
Like PLBs, they transmit distress alerts through the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite network but are specifically intended for maritime emergencies.

Satellite Phones
A satellite phone works like a normal telephone but connects directly to satellites instead of mobile phone masts.
Advantages include:
- Voice calls from remote locations.
- Text messaging.
- Contacting emergency services directly.
- Reliable communication where there is no mobile signal.
Satellite phones are commonly used on remote expeditions, polar travel, deserts, mountain ranges and ocean crossings.

Remember
No electronic device should replace good expedition planning. Always:
Leave a route plan with someone you trust.
Carry a map and compass and know how to use them.
Pack spare batteries or power banks where appropriate.
Learn traditional signalling methods such as whistles, mirrors, torches and ground-to-air signals.
Only activate an SOS beacon or emergency alert if there is an immediate threat to life or a situation that requires rescue.
Modern technology greatly improves your chances of being found, but combining it with sound outdoor skills and emergency signalling knowledge provides the highest level of safety during any field expedition.
