The fire roll (or Rudiger roll) technique is a friction-based method to generate an ember. It involves compressing wood ash inside a strip of plant fiber (like 100% cotton) and rolling it vigorously between two flat, hard surfaces to create intense heat.
The Fire Roll is called the "Rudiger roll" after the renowned German survival expert and author Rüdiger Nehberg. He popularized the friction fire technique in his wilderness survival books and brought the method to modern attention, even though the technique itself was originally invented by World War II prisoners of war (POWs).

- Cotton wool: Use 100% pure surgical cotton cotton wool.
- Synthetic blends: Avoid polyester or synthetic blends entirely.
- Wood ash: Collect fine, dry, powdery ash from a campfire.
- Alternative catalysts: Substitute ash with rust, baking soda, or dry clay dust.
- Friction boards: Find two flat, rough wooden boards or flat stones.
- Rolling too loosely: Wrap the cotton and ash roll tightly like a cigar.
- Too much ash: Use just a light, even dusting across the cotton layer.
- Weak pressure: Push down hard on the top board while rolling.
- Short strokes: Use long, continuous strokes across the full board surface.
- Stopping early: Roll vigorously for 15–20 seconds before checking for smoke.

Fire Roll Technique Step-by-Step
- Flatten the cotton: Pull apart a piece of cotton into a flat rectangle.
- Add the catalyst: Sprinkle a thin, even layer of dry wood ash onto it at one end works well.
- Roll it tightly: Roll the cotton tightly into a firm cylinder, will feal hard when pinched.
- Pre-roll for shape: Your can roll it gently between your palms to compress the fibers.
- Place on board: Put the cotton roll on a flat, rough wooden board.
- Apply the top board: Press down firmly with a second flat wooden board.
- Roll with pressure: Push down hard and roll the board back and forth.
8. Use long strokes: Move the top board at least 30 centimetres each way.
9. Increase the speed: Roll vigorously for 15 to 20 continuous seconds aprox twelve times.
10. Check for smoke: Look for a distinct, sweet-smelling smoke trail.
11. You can Gently open it: Unroll the charred cotton slightly to expose the glowing ember.
12. Transfer to tinder: Place the glowing ember into a prepared tinder bundle.
13. Blow to flame: Blow gently and steadily until the bundle catches fire.
