Steps To Preparing a Bow Drill

To prepare a bow drill, you need four key components: a dry, curved bow with cordage, a softwood hearth board, a straight spindle (drill), and a bearing block. You must also create a "burn-in" divot and a wedge-shaped notch on the hearth board to collect friction dust and create an ember. 
Preparing the kit requires specific steps to ensure enough friction and heat are generated:

Source the Wood

  • Hearth board & Spindle: Choose dry, dead, standing softwood (like willow, cedar, aspen, or poplar). A fingernail should easily make a dent in the wood.
  • Bow: Find a flexible, slightly curved hardwood or softwood branch (about arm-length) Hazel is a good choice.
  • Bearing Block: Use a piece of dense hardwood, stone, or bone that fits comfortably in your palm for single about about 70 mm for a single kit and around 700 mm for a group bowdrill kit.

Assemble the Components

  • The Bow: Tie a durable cord (like paracord or a shoelace) to one end of the bow, leaving a bit of slack. Create a single loop in the center of the string. 
  • The Spindle: Carve a straight, thumb-thick stick. Round both ends to dull, pointed tips. Slip the spindle into the loop of the bowstring so the string wraps around the center.
  • The Hearth Board: Flatten a dry branch so it rests perfectly flat on the ground without wobbling. 

Burn-in the Divot

  • Use a knife to carve a small starter dimple in the hearth board, about 1 cm from the edge.
  • Place the hearth board flat and kneel on it with one foot securing it firmly.
  • Position the spindle vertically: the bottom end in the divot, and the top end locked into your bearing block.
  • Apply steady downward pressure on the bearing block and use the bow to drill back and forth. Continue until the spindle wears a smooth, dark hole and produces thick smoke.

Cut the Notch

  • Remove the spindle. On the hearth board, you will see a charred, burned circle.
  • Carve a triangular, 1/8-sized slice or "V-notch" from the edge of the board into the absolute center of the charred circle.
  • Place a thin piece of leaf or bark (an ember pan) beneath this notch to catch your future ember.
