The <\/span>pump drill<\/span><\/strong> is a fascinating traditional friction-fire technique that turns a simple up-and-down pumping action into continuous rotation. With the right materials and technique, the rotating spindle generates enough friction against a wooden hearth board to produce a glowing ember.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Does a Pump Drill Work?<\/span><\/h2>\n

A pump drill uses a simple mechanical system to keep a spindle rotating.<\/span><\/p>\n

The main parts are:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Spindle<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 the vertical wooden shaft that rotates.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Pump handle<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 the horizontal handle that moves up and down.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Cord<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 attached to the ends of the handle and wrapped around the spindle.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Flywheel<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 a weighted disc that stores rotational momentum.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Hearth board<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 the piece of wood against which the spindle rotates.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Burn-in hole<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 the initial hole created by the spindle.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Notch<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 allows hot wood dust to collect and form an ember.<\/span><\/li>\n

    When the handle is pushed down, the cord rotates the spindle. The flywheel stores momentum and keeps the spindle rotating as the handle reaches the bottom of its stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n

    As the handle rises, the cord winds back around the spindle ready for the next downward stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This produces repeated rotation without having to manually rewind the drill.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The Friction Fire Principle<\/span><\/h2>\n

    The pump drill works using the same basic principle as other friction-fire techniques:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Rotation \u2192 friction \u2192 heat \u2192 wood dust \u2192 ember \u2192 tinder \u2192 flame<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    As the spindle rotates against the hearth board, friction produces heat. Fine wood particles are created and collect in the notch.<\/span><\/p>\n

    As the temperature increases, the dust begins to char and eventually forms a glowing ember.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The ember can then be transferred to a prepared tinder bundle and gently blown until it develops into a flame.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Pump drills are particularly interesting because the flywheel stores energy and helps maintain the rotation between strokes. This makes the mechanism surprisingly efficient compared with simply rubbing two sticks together.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
