The spindle is rotated directly between the palms of your hands. This makes it a challenging bushcraft skill that requires good preparation, technique, stamina and patience.

The Basic Principle

As the spindle is rapidly rotated against the hearth board, friction creates heat. Fine particles of wood are produced and collect in the notch cut into the hearth board.

As the temperature rises, these fine wood particles begin to smoke and char. With the correct combination of pressure, speed and suitable dry wood, the dust eventually forms a glowing ember.

The ember can then be transferred to a prepared tinder bundle and gently blown until it develops into a flame.

The Hand Drill System

A successful hand drill normally consists of:

Spindle – A straight, dry piece of suitable wood that is rotated between the palms.

Hearth board – A flat piece of dry wood that receives the spindle.

Burn-in hole – A small depression created by initially spinning the spindle.

Notch – A V-shaped cut from the edge of the hearth into the burn-in hole. This allows the hot wood dust to collect.

Ember catcher – A small piece of bark, wood or other suitable material placed beneath the notch to catch the developing ember.

Tinder bundle – Fine, dry tinder prepared before drilling begins so the ember can be transferred immediately.

From Friction to Flame

The process can be thought of as a simple chain:

Spindle rotation → friction → heat → fine wood dust → glowing ember → tinder → flame

The hardest part is not simply producing smoke.
