Ignite Your Outdoor Skills Today

The Scout Fire Triangle (or Combustion Triangle) is the foundation of fire safety, illustrating the three elements required for any fire to start and sustain itself: Heat, Fuel, and Oxygen. To prevent or extinguish a fire, you must remove at least one of these components.

Key Components of the Fire Triangle

Heat: The Ignition Source

The energy source required to ignite the fuel and maintain the combustion process. Heat sources can be open flames, sparks, hot surfaces, electrical faults, or friction.

Fuel: The Combustible Material

Any combustible material that is capable of burning. Tinder (For Catching Sparks) Kindling (For Building the Flame) Fuel (For Sustaining the Fire)

Oxygen: The Sustaining Element

Oxygen is the element that supports combustion. Abundant in air 21% oxygen creates a self-sustaining chemical chain reaction.

How the Fire Triangle Works

1

Fuel

Fuel is any combustible material that can ignite and sustain a fire. In outdoor settings, this often includes wood, leaves, and other organic matter.

2

Heat

Heat is the energy source that raises the material to its ignition temperature, allowing the fire to start. This can be provided by matches, lighters, or friction-based methods.

3

Oxygen

Oxygen from the air is essential for combustion. It combines with the fuel to produce the chemical reaction that sustains the fire.

Teaching the bushcraft fire triangle visually involves demonstrating that fire requires three elements: heat, fuel, and oxygen.

You can illustrate this by large Folding Builders Square, using the popular three sides marked with Fule Heat and Oxygen. Get your group to sort out prepaird items. You will need...
