Ash Leaves<\/h3>\n

Ash Trees and Bushcraft<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Ash is one of the UK's most useful native trees for traditional bushcraft. Its strong, tough and flexible wood has been used for centuries to make tools, handles, walking sticks, staffs, poles, bows and other woodland equipment.<\/p>\n

For Scout bushcraft, ash can be useful for shelter building, campcraft, carving and firewood. Straight branches make good poles and supports, while suitable pieces of wood can be carved into simple camp tools and projects.<\/p>\n

Ash is also an excellent tree for woodland identification activities. Look for its distinctive black buds, opposite branching pattern and bunches of winged seeds known as ash keys.<\/p>\n

Ash dieback<\/strong> is a serious fungal disease affecting the UK's native European ash (Fraxinus excelsior<\/em>)<\/strong>. It is caused by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus<\/em> and can cause leaf loss, shoot dieback, branch death and, in severe cases, the decline and death of the tree.<\/p>\n

Young ash trees can be particularly vulnerable, while older trees may survive for many years with varying levels of damage. Severely affected trees can become structurally weakened, increasing the risk of falling branches or tree failure.<\/p>\n

This is particularly important for Scout activities in woodland. Never climb, shelter against, or carry out activities beneath an ash tree that appears unsafe or has significant dieback.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
